How to Prepare Your Skin for Autumn and Winter: Treatments and Skincare for Healthy, Hydrated, Glowing Skin

By Dr Kyra Drinnan, GP & Aesthetics Specialist at Skinphinity, Cheshire, Tarporley’s only doctor-led aesthetics clinic covering Tarporley, Middlewich and wider Cheshire

If your skin has started to feel a little drier, duller or more sensitive as summer fades, you’re not imagining it.

That familiar autumn combination of colder temperatures, chilly winds, lower humidity and central heating can all take its toll on our skin. Suddenly, the moisturiser that worked perfectly well a few months ago doesn’t seem quite enough. Your makeup isn’t sitting as smoothly, fine lines look more noticeable and your skin can feel tight by lunchtime.

Sound familiar?

The good news is that autumn is actually a great time to reset your skincare routine and prepare your skin for the colder months ahead.

At Skinphinity Aesthetics Clinic in Tarporley, Cheshire, I often encourage my patients to take a proactive approach to seasonal skin health. Rather than waiting until your skin becomes dry, irritated or lacklustre, now is the perfect time to invest in hydration, skin quality and protecting your skin barrier.

Why does your skin become drier in autumn and winter?

Your skin has its own natural protective barrier, which helps keep moisture in and protects it from the environment.

As temperatures drop, cold air and wind can increase moisture loss from the skin, while central heating can make the air indoors considerably drier. Add in hot showers, harsh cleansers and perhaps a little too much exfoliation, and your skin barrier can quickly become stressed.

You may notice:

  • Skin feeling dry, tight or uncomfortable

  • Flaking or rough texture

  • A dull-looking complexion

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Fine lines appearing more noticeable

  • Dehydration around the eyes and mouth

  • Makeup sitting unevenly

Keeping your skin barrier healthy is one of the most important things you can do during the colder months. Moisturisers and emollients help to lock in moisture and protect the skin’s surface. But healthy winter skin is about more than simply applying moisturiser.

Rather than simply treating dry skin with increasingly rich creams, I recommend a skin-quality approach that looks at deep hydration and the overall condition of the skin. A combination of professional treatments, the right skincare for your individual needs, and consistent daily protection can make a real difference — helping your skin stay hydrated, comfortable and resilient throughout the colder months.

How can you prepare your skin for autumn and winter?

A good autumn skin plan usually comes down to three things: hydration, skin quality and protection.

For some, that may simply mean adjusting their skincare routine. For others, professional aesthetics treatments can provide an additional boost.

1. Consider skin boosters for deeper hydration and skin quality

If your skin is looking tired, dehydrated or less radiant after summer, autumn can be an excellent time to consider a skin booster treatment.

Injectable treatments such as Profhilo® and Skinvive™ are designed to improve skin hydration and quality rather than to add significant volume or change the shape of your face. For many, the aim isn't to look different. It’s to look fresh, rested and like yourself — just with better-quality skin.

Depending on the product and your individual skin, these skin booster treatments may help improve:

  • Skin hydration

  • Smoothness

  • Elasticity

  • Radiance

  • Fine lines

  • Overall skin quality

This can be particularly appealing as we head towards winter, when maintaining good hydration becomes even more important.

Autumn can be a perfect time to consider a course of skin boosters, allowing your skin time to benefit before the colder months are fully established.

A consultation with a doctor is important before treatment, as the most appropriate product and treatment plan will depend on your skin, concerns and medical history. If you are considering skin boosters in Cheshire, here at Skinphinity’s doctor-led clinics, I can assess your skin, talk through the options with you, and the results you can expect to see.

2. Give your complexion a fresh start with a chemical peel

Summer can leave behind more than happy memories and a tan.

Sun exposure can contribute to uneven pigmentation, dullness and changes in skin texture. Autumn and winter can therefore be a good time to consider a professionally prescribed chemical peel.

A peel may be appropriate if you're concerned about:

  • Dull or tired-looking skin

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Mild pigmentation

  • Congested skin

  • Uneven texture

  • Fine lines

Chemical peels (also known as skin peels) work by applying a carefully selected solution to the skin to encourage controlled exfoliation and renewal. There are many different types and strengths of peel, so this isn't a case of one peel fits all.

Choosing the right chemical peel starts with understanding your skin. A thorough medical consultation is an important first step, allowing me to select a peel that’s appropriate for your skin type, concerns and overall goals.

A consultation becomes particularly important if you have sensitive skin, pigmentation concerns or an underlying skin condition. Everyone’s skin is different, and the right treatment should be tailored to you rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

It’s also worth remembering that chemical peels don’t always need to be viewed as a one-off treatment. Here at Skinphinity’s doctor-led clinic in Tarporley, I often incorporate professionally prescribed peels into a wider skin-health plan, designed to support your skin over time.

In many cases, the best results come from combining professional treatments with a carefully considered home skincare routine.

3. Give your skincare routine an autumn upgrade

One of the biggest mistakes people make in winter is continuing to use exactly the same skincare routine they used during the summer months.

Your routine doesn't necessarily need a complete overhaul every season, but it may benefit from a few thoughtful changes as temperatures fall.

  • Start with gentle cleansing

If your skin is feeling dry or sensitive, now is not the time to strip it further.

Choose a gentle cleanser that removes makeup, SPF and impurities without leaving your skin feeling tight or squeaky clean.

That tight feeling isn't a sign that your cleanser is working brilliantly. It can be a sign that your skin needs a little more support. Look for a hydrating or oil-based cleanser and avoid acid ingredients or anything physically aggressive, like a scrub.

  • Prioritise hydration

When choosing products for your daily skincare routine, look for ingredients that help attract and retain moisture and support your skin barrier.

Depending on your individual skin, these might include:

  • Hyaluronic acid

  • Glycerin

  • Ceramides

  • Squalane

  • Niacinamide

A hydrating serum followed by a good moisturiser can help replenish and retain moisture. You may also find that your skin prefers a richer moisturiser during the colder months.

And if you're scrolling different products or standing in the skincare aisle wondering what on earth you actually need, you're certainly not alone. There are thousands of products and ingredients competing for your attention.

At Skinphinity here in Cheshire, I offer medical-grade skincare consultations and tailored skincare plans, including products from pHformula and other carefully selected professional skincare brands.

The aim is to create a routine that works for your skin — and, importantly, one that you will actually use.

  • Don't forget your lips and hands

Your face isn't the only area that suffers when temperatures drop.

Lips and hands are particularly vulnerable to cold weather, wind and frequent hand washing.

Keep a nourishing lip balm and hand cream close by and make applying them part of your daily routine.

It sounds simple, but these small habits can make a surprisingly big difference over the winter months.

  • Yes, you still need SPF in winter

One of the biggest skincare myths is that sunscreen is only necessary when the sun is shining.

SPF should be a year-round habit.

Although UVB rays are generally weaker during winter, UVA rays are present throughout the year and can penetrate clouds and standard window glass. UVA exposure contributes to premature skin ageing, fine lines and wrinkles.

My advice is simple: wear an SPF of at least 30, 365 days a year.

Apply your SPF as the final step in your morning skincare routine and make it a habit rather than something you only reach for on sunny days.

Sunscreen is even more important if you're having professional treatments such as chemical peels, and your doctor may give you specific advice about sun exposure and skincare before and after treatment.

Final thoughts

Your best skin this autumn and winter doesn't need to be complicated.

There is no single treatment or skincare routine that works for everyone.

Your skin is individual, and your priorities are too. Perhaps you're noticing dehydration and fine lines. Maybe your complexion has become dull and uneven. Or perhaps you're simply looking for a little more glow and better skin quality.

At Skinphinity Aesthetics Clinic in Tarporley, Cheshire, we take a bespoke approach to aesthetics and your skin health.

Sometimes that means improving your skincare routine. Sometimes a course of skin boosters or chemical peels may be appropriate. And sometimes a combination of treatments gives the best result.

The aim is to support your skin so that you can look and feel your best.

And you don't need to wait until your skin is dry, dull or irritated before doing something about it.

If you're in Cheshire and you’re considering preparing your skin for autumn and winter, I'd love to help you understand what would be most appropriate for your skin.

Book a consultation with me at my Tarporley or Middlewich clinics, and let's create a skin plan that's right for you.
