The safety of Botox and fillers - what you should consider before getting injections

The safety of Botox and fillers for aesthetic treatments is a question that has been on the minds of many people considering cosmetic procedures. There is a lot of misinformation circulating about these treatments, and it’s important to understand the facts before making any decisions. In this blog, we’ll discuss the safety of Botox and fillers, the benefits of these treatments, and other important information.

How do they work?

Botox and fillers are popular treatments in the world of aesthetics, used to reduce wrinkles, soften lines, and give the face a more sculpted and youthful look. Botox is a neuromodulator made from botulinum toxin, and it works by temporarily blocking nerve signals in the areas where it is injected. Fillers, on the other hand, are made of hyaluronic acid and are injected into the skin to replace lost volume and rejuvenate areas of bone or fat loss, or to enhance a patient’s features.

In terms of safety, both Botox and fillers have been extensively studied and are considered safe when administered by a qualified professional. The FDA has approved both Botox and fillers for cosmetic use, and the risks associated with these treatments are relatively low.

What side effects can I expect? And the risks?

Some common side effects include pain, redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site, but these are usually mild and short-lived.

Some patients may experience greater swelling and this may depend on your skin type and sensitivity. There are other specific side effects with Botox to be aware of such as Double vision, blurred vision, droopy eye lids and heaviness of the eyebrows (not an exhaustive list) and the risk of these will depend on the experience of the practitioner along with your individual anatomy.

The most serious risks of dermal fillers include vascular occlusion and blindness, of which there have been hundreds of reports world wide. However, again this may depend on the experience and knowledge of your injector, along with the area being injected (for example the frown lines, noses, foreheads and temples are considered the highest risk for blindness).

Do NOT be afraid to ask your injector about what complications they have experienced and how they dealt with them. Enquire about where they learnt about their complication management? How many patients have they treated? It is your right as a patient to know the answers to these questions!

So why would I consider getting them?

The benefits of Botox and fillers are numerous. Botox can reduce wrinkles and soften lines, giving the face a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Fillers can add volume to the face, making it look more sculpted and contoured. Both treatments can also be used to enhance features such as the lips and cheeks, giving them a fuller and more defined look. They can also be used in a different way - to rejuvenate the ageing face, but when done properly this can look extremely natural.

For some they can be an alternative to surgery, with much less downtime, less expensive, and lower risk. But do be aware they will not lift the face anywhere near as much as having a surgical proceedure.

How long will they last?

It’s important to note that Botox and fillers are not permanent treatments. The results for Botox typically last for 3-4 months, depending on the type of treatment and the individual’s unique body chemistry. The effects of fillers tend to last longer than those of Botox, perhaps between 6-12months, but both treatments need to be repeated periodically to maintain the desired results.

Does my injector need to be medically qualified?

When it comes to the safety of Botox and fillers, it’s important to remember that these treatments are medical procedures and should only be performed by a qualified professional. It’s important to do your research and find a reputable provider who has experience in administering these treatments. Additionally, be sure to discuss any potential risks and side effects with your provider before beginning treatment. If they don’t mention all the above risks and more, I would not let them touch you with a needle. Consent should be obtained verbally and written signatures provided from both parties.

In summary

Overall, Botox and fillers can be safe and effective treatments for reducing wrinkles and adding volume to the face. When administered by a qualified professional, the risks associated with these treatments are minimal. Be sure to do your research and find a provider that you feel comfortable with before beginning treatment.
