Under-Eye Mesotherapy: An Alternative to Fillers?

Our under-eye area can make us look tired, with hollows, dark circles, puffiness all being quite common, worsening with age. And while some patients get a fantastic result with tear trough fillers, many are not suitable: treating this latter group can lead to problems such as long term swelling/oedema.

However there are a few things which may help the under-eye area in those not suitable for fillers.

Who might not be suitable for dermal fillers?

Anyone with eye bags or swelling under the eyes, or general water retention in the area is not a good candidate for dermal fillers, which can often (though not always) cause more swelling, sometimes months or years down the line. Some of my patients will know that I’ve said no to tear trough filler to them for these reasons.

So what is the alternative to fillers?

Over the past few years there has been a growing trend in using Mesotherapy and skin boosters on the face, to hydrate, refresh and rejuvenate the skin. These are typically safer and work differently to dermal fillers. For example, injecting a product called NCTF under the eyes as a skin booster using their patented Nanosoft needle.

This is growing in popularity month by month as more people find out about the benefits of using these treatments under the eyes. Such treatments can help improve fine lines, loose saggy skin and dark circles in a safe and virtually painless way.

How is it injected, and is it safe?

We can inject a product such as NCTF using a Nanoneedle, which is 3 miniscule needles that grip onto the top layers of skin, gently allowing product to perfuse into the top layers of the dermis (skin). It causes hardly any pain, is quick, taking only minutes to perform, and there is very little chance of bruising.

This product is actually much safer than dermal fillers as the skin is not completely pierced and therefore the chance of hitting an artery is almost zero. Bruising, pain, infection and bleeding risk are all significantly lower also.

So yes it is a very safe procedure!

The main side effect is swelling, similar to little bee stings immediately after, which last perhaps 6-12 hours.

What results should I expect?

Generally patients will see an improvement to fine lines, darkness, and improved firmness of the skin, as seen above in my patient!

A minimum of 3 sessions are required initially, spaced 2-3 weeks apart, followed by a treatment every 3 months.

Results can vary depending on the individual and initial severity of skin damage/laxity.
